Of the tens of thousands of American soldiers, sailors, and airmen who took part in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, only 235 were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, or Medal of Honor for acts of extraordinary heroism. I was conducting research for a story I am writing that includes the heroism of Arthur V. Shields, Landing Craft Infantry 415 who earned the Navy Cross for his actions on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. I had a copy of his citation, testimony from his friend and shipmate as well as testmony from crewmen of LCI (L) 416, and lots of details from muster rolls and after action reports. However, upon recieving Phil Nordyke's book - "American Heroes of WWII, Normandy June 6, 1944", I discovered that Phil's meticulous research included the priceless find at the National Archives of the actual Letter of Recommendation for Appropriate Award written by the commanding officer of LCI (L) 415. Based on that record, Phil included an excellent narrative regards to the actions of Shields that brought to life his Citation for the Navy Cross. Phil's "going the extra mile" in research is evident throughout this book. It is a smartly organized, continuously riveting, "can't put the book down" account of the heros of D-Day. American Heroes of World War II Normandy June 6, 1944 is an extraordinary work by Phil Nordyke. The way he organizes the eyewitness accounts and pictures of so many of the brave men who made this invasion, creates a narrative that is easy to follow, and contains the great and horrific details of just what our military went through on that day. My Dad went in on Omaha beach but never spoke much about his experience. This book recreates a vivid image of the heroic efforts of so many of all of the heroes that parachuted in and those that stormed the beaches. The later part of the book details the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, and Navy Cross citations with pictures of those who risked and gave so much. Phil's love for the "Greatest Generation" who saved the world from Hitler's Nazi Germany, has written a number of books about World War II, and he has a penchant for detail that enables the reader to understand what exactly happened over there. I highly recommend this book for those who want to know.

Excellent book with superb well researched data. If you want a very detailed book on the D-day landings - then this is essential. It is the sort of book that I am going to be dipping in and out of for years. A great work.
Crisp, well-written, mostly just the facts, and incredible stories. Fills a gap in the literature. Mr. Nordyke is to be commended.
My wife and I were flipping through our copy, reading the stories and looking at the maps. My Mom's Uncle's account of what happened that morning is contained in the book. I'm sure that I had heard Uncle Ray's story before, but I had never seen the maps or the landing boat timing charts. Having all of that context to put it into perspective makes a huge difference to our understanding of that day.

If one is looking to find out about the valor and courage displayed by Individual servicemen on the coast of Normandy France on D-Day then this book is for you. Nordyke as he has done in the past has put together a very thorough and concise history of all servicemen who were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross as well as the Navy Cross on that historical day. The book includes their citations and when available photos of the awardees. The text is magnificent and is accompanied by precise maps which detail the location of the historic actions. As a researcher and Historian who has walked these grounds countless times Nordyke's book is invaluable. This is the only book that I know of that pinpoints the majority of these actions with maps.
This is the best book about D-Day I've ever read because it singles out the heroes of June 6, 1944. Many books include the broad movement of troops during this extraordinary event, but Phil Nordyke gives accounts of the heroic actions of individuals displaying remarkable courage. I am proud that my father, a captain in the Medical Detachment, 29th Infantry Division, was among those honored, earning the Distinguished Service Cross in the early hours of the assault on Omaha Beach. According to the citation, in complete disregard for his own safety, the captain ran to fallen soldiers under heavy fire tending to the wounded and dying. As a non-combatant, the DSC was the highest award he could be given. I am 64 years old and this is the first mention in a book of my father's bravery. It took Phil Nordyke, talented World War II historian, to track me down as he did so many family members. Like so many others often mention, my father didn't talk much about the war. By the way June 6, 1944 was also my father's second wedding anniversary. He had nine children before dying in 1965. Because of a saved letter by my mother, we think of another act of bravery on D-Day. My father's best friend and a fellow medical office, Captain Robert Ware, promised each other to stay close during the landing. When the gate fell, my father lost his footing exiting the watercraft and struggling badly, went under water. Captain Ware held on and pulled my father until he got his footing. When my father turned to offer his thanks, he saw that Captain Ware was shot dead. My father never forgot Captain Ware. Every June 6, the Cotter family remembers Captain Ware. Without his last action, none of us would have been born. There are so many stories like this. God bless all the courageous men and women who continue to be prepared to sacrifice their all.
